Holiday Message from David Baril

Reflecting on the Game of Golf

As we approach the end of 2022 and my eighth year as the Golf Professional at Coal Creek Golf Course, I reflect upon how the game of golf prepares you for life.

Many golfers come to the game expecting to control the process and outcomes as they can in other parts of their lives. However, despite a golfer's best efforts to have the right equipment, preparation, and strategy, the game of golf comes down to how you manage expectations and handle unforeseen circumstances.

Golfers, unlike other athletes such as soccer or hockey players, don't have a coach to help pick them up after a mistake or bad play. Therefore, golfers must learn to be their own coach (or "emotional caddy" if you will) and pick themselves up when things don't go as planned. They learn that to be successful, they must remain calm in the face of adversity, stay present in the moment, have positive self-talk, and focus on what they can control. Because golf is not about hitting a perfect shot, it is about overcoming bad shots, bunkers, anxiety, weather, course conditions, and other distractions to play each and every shot as best you can.

This past year, our community collectively dealt with unimaginable events beyond our control. Nothing in our life training (education, parenting, planning, investing, etc.) could have prepared us for what unfolded. However, in the face of adversity, when our community could have given up, it didn't. Instead, it came together and focused on what they could control - helping each other.

Coal Creek Golf Course is proud to be a part of this resilient community. We stand behind you and support you as you overcome all the challenges that go along with rebuilding your homes and your lives. We are thankful for the support that everyone continues to show for each other and Coal Creek Golf Course. And we truly appreciate every day you choose to show up on the tee box, excited to play another round. As we move into 2023, we are committed to staying focused on our primary goals of quality, courtesy, and service as well as finding ways new ways to improve your experience.

During the holiday, we hope you can spend some time with friends and family doing things you love. And just like when you are out on the course, remember to check in with that emotional caddy. Take a deep breath, be kind to yourself, focus on the moment you are in, and just do the best you can. Because tomorrow, you will wake up at even par again, ready to play another day.

Happy Holidays.
